PAWS for ART – The Stone County SPCA (SCSPCA) in partnership with the Stone County Arts Council (SCAC) is offering a fun night of art, sipping lemonade and sweet tea, and painting the State of Mississippi.  Fee is a donation of $45 to benefit the SCSPCA to pay for kitten/cat spay/neuter. STONE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL SPONSORS COLLAGE WORKSHOP

Award Winning Artist Marilyn Ammons of Spanish Fort, Alabama, will present: COLLAGE FROM A-Z. The workshop includes creation collage papers and supplies and the use of them to finish a collage art piece. The workshop will happen on August 26, 2017, from 9AM – 3PM at Community Arts Center-Perkinston Campus, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Cost is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. Call 601 528-2343 to confirm space and additional information. Participants are encouraged to bring COPIES of “family” pics, letters, documents, travel artifacts..etc to include in your personal collage. Bring your own lunch.



BICENTENNIAL MURAL: You Are Invited to Participate!

Mural artist Kym Garraway will be painting the MISSISSIPPI BICENTENNIAL HEROES MURAL on the south wall of the Stone County Education Center (corner of Broad and First Streets) September 4-8, 2017. Community artists who would like to participate, please contact Kathryn Lewis at 228-6974505 to sign up for your time to paint. Stone High art students and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College art students will also be assisting.
Citizens are invited to come by and watch the journey. This mural is funded through a Bicentennial Grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Humanities Council.

The Mural Journey Continues

Mural Artist Elizabeth Veglia, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), Perkinston Campus, art teachers Sandra Cassibry and Daniel Calcote and their art student are creating Stone County’s 8th mosaic tile mural and 35th County Mural. The newest mural celebrates Mississippi’s Bicentennial and will be formally dedicated at the Pine Hill Celebration in Wiggins on March 18, 2017.  This project is a partnership of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, MGCCC, and the Stone County Board of Supervisors and was made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, whose mission is to promote understanding of and to conserve and enhance the heritage resources of the six Mississippi Gulf Coast counties.

The Centennial Mural Journey Begins

Mural artist Elizabeth Veglia (left) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) Fine Arts Chair  (right) Sandra Cassibry begin celebration of Stone County’s Centennial. The mosaic tile mural will be dedicated May 10, 2016, and is supported by a grant from the Heritage Foundation and the Stone County Economic Development Partnership (SC EDP).

Veglia, Cassibry, and MGCCC art students are  working with mural architect Rusty Ryals and the SC EDP Centennial Committee on this significant project.SC100 Logo

Dizzy Dean’s Birthday Celebrated

Great day at the Dizzy Dean Welcome Center in Wiggins, Stone County, Mississippi, celebrating Dizzy’s Birthday ! Come see Dizzy’s mural at the Welcome Center and meet “Dizzy” the cat!

Dizzy was born January 16, 1910, in Lucas, Arkansas, but called Stone County home for many years.

Dedication of Community Banners and Mosaic Tile Benches

Please join us Monday, May 18th at 6PM in the cafeteria of Stone High School for the dedication of the latest additions to the “Murals of Stone County”, our Community Banners and the Mosaic Tile Benches (click link to the article about these wonderful benches).

The banners were created on March 27, 2015, with award winning quilter Marcus Weekley. The banners celebrate Stone County’s 100 years! Thanks to our sponsors: Bank of Wiggins, Betsy and Otis Rowell, Friends of Stone County Libraries, and the Stone County Arts Council in partnership with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and the Stone County School District.

Mosaic Tile Concrete Benches

Emily Sumrall’s 9th grade students from Stone High School recently spent two days with mosaic tile mural artist Elizabeth Veglia and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) arts instructor Sandra Cassibry creating mosaic tile concrete benches celebrating Stone County’s heritage plants and animals.

Project sponsors include the Bank of Wiggins, Betsy and Otis Rowell, the Friends of Stone County Libraries, the Stone County Arts Council, MGCCC, and the Stone County School District. We thank everyone for their support.

Stone County Journey/Art Quilt Community Teams At Work

Award winning Storyteller, Fabric Artist, and Author Diane Williams presented “The Historic Journey of African American Quilters” on November 7, 2014 in Wiggins, Mississippi. This program was sponsored by the MS Humanities Council.

Diane then lead Community Teams through the creation of a “Stone County Journey/Art Quilt” on November 8th. The SCAC sponsored this event. Below are photos of the Community Teams and their work.

SCAC News and Notes

The Ribbon Cutting for the new Community Arts Center will be November 19, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. All are invited to the ribbon cutting.
The Festival of Lights – Calling All Angels, a fund raiser for the SCAC,  will be held at the Malone Fine Arts Building (Perkinston Campus, MGCCC) beginning at 6pm on December 12, 2012.
SCAC monthly meeting will be November 11,2014,  at 5:30 pm (Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus) with studio class to follow to finish art pieces for Calling All Angels!
