PAWS for ART – The Stone County SPCA (SCSPCA) in partnership with the Stone County Arts Council (SCAC) is offering a fun night of art, sipping lemonade and sweet tea, and painting the State of Mississippi.  Fee is a donation of $45 to benefit the SCSPCA to pay for kitten/cat spay/neuter. Grant for Teaching Artist

Amy Perry, Cher Barefoot, Angelia Ross and Teaching Artist Tonya Hayes celebrate the announcement that Stone Middle School in Wiggins, Mississippi, received a grant from the Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE), to research, study and present the story of Emilie and Marie Stapp. The Stapp sisters were Stone County community advocates , philanthropists, and Emily was a world known children’s writer.

Stone County Centennial – Mississippi Bicentennial Poles Update

The newest set of Mississippi Centennial – Stone County Bicentennial Poles are in place at the Stone County Economic Development Office, located in the historic Wiggins Depot. The poles celebrate Stone County’s Centennial and Mississippi’s Bicentennial, its culture and heritage. The pole project was funded in part through a Bicentennial grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Humanities Council.

Author Louise Borden Visits Stone County Schools

Children’s author Louise Borden recently visited Stone County schools and the after-school program. Using books donated by Wynn and Carolyn Alexander, this project was an official Bicentennial program supported by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Development Authority.

Award winning children’s author Louise Borden will visit Stone County. This official bicentennial project is  made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council and through support from the Mississippi Development Authority in partnership with the Friends of Stone County Libraries and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC). Louise Borden is the author of 19 picture books, and several picture book biographies.
Ms. Borden is a featured presenter at the 2017 (50th Annual) Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival April 5-7 at the University of Southern Mississippi.  All of Borden’s events are free and open to the public. For further information contact Kathryn Lewis at (228) 697-4505.

Thank You Wynn and Carolyn Alexander!

Wynn and Carolyn Alexander donated $500 to the Friends of Stone County Libraries to purchase books for Award Winning Louise Borden’s visit. Each classroom teacher attending the presentations and each public and school library in Stone County will receive a book. This donation will be used to help match the Bicentennial Grant received from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Mississippi Development Authority.

The Mural Journey Continues

Mural Artist Elizabeth Veglia, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC), Perkinston Campus, art teachers Sandra Cassibry and Daniel Calcote and their art student are creating Stone County’s 8th mosaic tile mural and 35th County Mural. The newest mural celebrates Mississippi’s Bicentennial and will be formally dedicated at the Pine Hill Celebration in Wiggins on March 18, 2017.  This project is a partnership of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, MGCCC, and the Stone County Board of Supervisors and was made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, whose mission is to promote understanding of and to conserve and enhance the heritage resources of the six Mississippi Gulf Coast counties.

Additional Centennial Poles Planned

Stone County continues its Centennial Celebration and the Mississippi Bicentennial by adding four more sets of Garden poles to honor our culture, heritage and the arts! In addition to the Centennial poles in place at Jack’s Hardware, the Bank of Wiggins, and the Stone County Enterprise, additional poles will be added for the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, the Stone County Arts Council, Stone County Libraries and Mississippi Bicentennial Poles at the Stone County Centennial Mural. Partnerships include the Stone County Arts Council, Bank of Wiggins and the Friends of Stone County Libraries. These additional poles are “an official bicentennial project made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the Mississippi Development Authority.”

Celebrating Stone County’s Centennial! The first set of “Centennial Garden Poles” are located at the branch of the Bank of Wiggins! The Bank was one of the sponsors for the poles. Local artists painted the Centennial Poles, the Heritage poles that celebrate businesses that are at least 100 years old, and a theme pole that celebrates the business  (painted by artist Kym Garraway).

Congratulations to Stone County and the Bank of Wiggins on their 100th Birthday!
