PAWS for ART – The Stone County SPCA (SCSPCA) in partnership with the Stone County Arts Council (SCAC) is offering a fun night of art, sipping lemonade and sweet tea, and painting the State of Mississippi.  Fee is a donation of $45 to benefit the SCSPCA to pay for kitten/cat spay/neuter. Summer Art Workshop 2017!

Briley Hines (McHenry), Paxton and Lucy George (Perk), Katharine Spacht (Perk), and Donna and Davis Walker were among the students at the Summer Art Workshop sponsored by the Stone County Arts Council in partnership with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Art Instructor Kelli Spacht worked with students to create different art pieces each day!  Students learned weaving, drawing, abstract watercolor painting, and made Chihuly inspired bowls.

A Gathering of Heroes

The “Perk Players” in partnership with “The Telling Trees Project” presented A Gathering of Heroes.  Admission to the production included donations to “Our Daily Bread Food Pantry”! Over 15 flats of food were donated!

Third Annual Creative Economy Workshop

The Stone County Economic Development Partnership, MS Gulf Coast Community College and the Mississippi Creative Economy sponsored the Third Annual Creative Economy Workshop, February 23, 2017, at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Featured speakers included Tonya Sanders Hays (Wings Director and writer of the two “Telling Trees” Plays featuring Stone County stories), Rick Wilemon (William Carey University-curator, painter, and sculptor) and Bethany Byrd (Marketing) “Own Your Hill”.  Robert St. John was the luncheon keynote speaker and the Ultimate Panel Discussion followed – Tres Hombres– Robert St. John (Chef, Restaurateur, Author), Malcolm White (Director Mississippi Arts Commission) and Wyatt Waters (watercolorist and author)! 65+ participants enjoyed a day of sharing and learning from these incredible workshop leaders!

Stone County Arts Council March Meeting                       and Kelly Spacht Workshop

The Stone County Arts Council will meet on March 21, 2017 at 4:30pm at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The meeting is open to all interested participants.
Following the meeting, at 5:30pm, artist Kelly Spacht will present the workshop “Painting Jellyfish.” The workshop is open to SCAC members for $25 and non-members for $40. For more information and to register, contact Sandra Cassibry at (601) 928-2343 or (601) 928-6298.

Free Little Library Houses

The Friends of Stone County Librariesis proud to sponsor “Free Little Library Houses” in our public and school libraries and features local artists.  The “Seuss House” was designed and built by the Stone County Prisoners and painted by Stone County Artist Kelly Spacht. This library is located at the Stone Elementary School and offers books to children. A book exchange is recommended but not required!

The next SCAC workshop is “funky fish” with Artist Kelly Spacht on October 10th. For more information about workshops, to register or meetings, call 601-928-6298.

Upcoming Event Reminders

  • September 15: Stone County Arts Council (SCAC) meeting is at 5:30pm followed at 6:30pm by a stained glass assemblage workshop (cross/dragonfly);
  • September 19: 9am-3pm; Debra Ballinger Basic Pencil Drawing;
  • October 10: Funky Fish with artist Kelly Spacht has been rescheduled for this date for 9am-3pm;
  • October 20: Stone County Arts Council meets at  5:30pm followed at 6:30pm by a  “Home” Canvas painting workshop with Sandra Cassibry.

“Little Free Library Houses”

As summer approaches, be on the lookout for the “Little Free Library Houses” in our community. These beautiful houses are painted by artists in the area and filled with books for children by the Friends of Stone County Libraries. This Community project benefits all of us.

The “Wise Reading Owl” painted by Kym Garraway will visit the Wiggins Library this summer for the Summer Reading Program. Beginning this fall, this Little Free Library willfind its home at Perk Elementary.

Coming Events

Join the Stone County Arts Council at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus for the Fabric Arts Show featuring the “Stone County Community Quilt” on January 27th at 6:00 pm. In addition to the “Quilt”, Fabric Art pieces from participants in the Quilt journey will be on display. This opening is open to the public so join us! The Pine Hill Dulcimers will perform at 6:30 pm.
