Additional Centennial Poles Planned

Stone County continues its Centennial Celebration and the Mississippi Bicentennial by adding four more sets of Garden poles to honor our culture, heritage and the arts! In addition to the Centennial poles in place at Jack’s Hardware, the Bank of Wiggins, and the Stone County Enterprise, additional poles will be added for the Stone County Economic Development Partnership, the Stone County Arts Council, Stone County Libraries and Mississippi Bicentennial Poles at the Stone County Centennial Mural. Partnerships include the Stone County Arts Council, Bank of Wiggins and the Friends of Stone County Libraries. These additional poles are “an official bicentennial project made possible by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the Mississippi Development Authority.”

Art and Spirituality with Joy Jennings

The Stone County Arts Council will sponsor a workshop on Art and Spirituality on Saturday, March 15 from 9:00 until 2:00 at the Visual Arts Center at the Perk Campus of MGCCC.  SCAC member and artist, Joy Jennings, will be the presenter for this workshop.  Joy has presented several of these workshops in this area, mainly through her church, St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Gulfport and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi.  She has recently completed a two-year course of study in spiritual direction from the Center of Ministry and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, and she is now combining that training along with her art in these workshops. Participants can expect a quiet, reflective day to relax, create several artistic pieces, as well as have time for contemplative exercises to center ourselves and find those sacred spaces within ourselves.  Several optional art activities will be introduced, but if you are an artist and prefer to have this time to work on some of your own art projects, please bring your art supplies with you.  The supplies will be furnished for the art activities which are included in the workshop.  Light snacks will be provided throughout the day, but since we are staying until 2:00, you may wish to bring a sack lunch. The fee for the workshop, which includes all supplies is members $60 and non-members $75. To register or for further information call 601-928-6298.

REMEMBER: If you attended the Carlson, Garraway, Cassibry or Huffmaster workshop in 2014 and are a current SCAC member, Joy’s workshop is free, but remember to register by calling 601-928-6298 or contacting Sandra at her email at sandra.cassibry@mgccc.edu.
