Stone County Arts Council to meet July 15, 2014

The Stone County Arts Council sponsored incredible studio classes the week of June 23rd. Classes included gel prints with Marilyn Ammons, prayer flags with Provie Musso, silk painting with Kelli Spacht and acrylic canvas flower painting with Joy Johnson. It was a great week to be together, experiment and “do art.”
The SCAC will meet July 15th at 5:30 pm at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus! Plan to attend. An exciting update on the Community Arts Building will be presented.

Celebration of Stone County’s Agriculture

Emilie Sumrall’s 9th grade English class at Stone High School completed this spring an extensive project studying Stone County’s history, government, transportation, leaders/heroes and agriculture. The students decided they wanted to take a huge step and become “first hand participants ” in Mississippi’s official “Mural County” and sponsor a mural celebrating the farmers and Stone County’s agriculture. Working with mural artist Kym Garraway, the mural is now underway, will be finished this summer and installed in the hallway leading to the SHS cafeteria in August.

A special thanks to Jack’s Home Improvement for donation of the boards for the mural.

Coming Soon – A Mural Celebrating Stone County Produce

Kathryn Lewis recently had an incredible experience working with a class of 9th graders at Stone High School this semester. These students just finished a wonderful project celebrating Stone County’s history while fulfilling a Common Core objective.  An outcome of this project will be the next Mural of Stone County which will celebrate the fruits and vegetables produced here.

Notes of interest from the initial planning for the mural:
  • There are approximately 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables produced by Stone County farmers for sale. Some of this produced is donated to our food pantry at some time during the year for free distribution to the needy.
  • This will be another painted mural of a farmer and the produce. The farmer will be generic representing all races, sexes, and creeds that call Stone County home.
  • Each participating student’s fingerprints will be placed in the farmer or produce to create the visual effect.
  • We are working on the idea of creating the image with professional artist, student artists, and the classroom students dedicated to this project.
Kathryn noted these are “amazing students!!” and thanks them for celebrating this place called home!

Art and Spirituality with Joy Jennings

The Stone County Arts Council will sponsor a workshop on Art and Spirituality on Saturday, March 15 from 9:00 until 2:00 at the Visual Arts Center at the Perk Campus of MGCCC.  SCAC member and artist, Joy Jennings, will be the presenter for this workshop.  Joy has presented several of these workshops in this area, mainly through her church, St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Gulfport and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi.  She has recently completed a two-year course of study in spiritual direction from the Center of Ministry and the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, and she is now combining that training along with her art in these workshops. Participants can expect a quiet, reflective day to relax, create several artistic pieces, as well as have time for contemplative exercises to center ourselves and find those sacred spaces within ourselves.  Several optional art activities will be introduced, but if you are an artist and prefer to have this time to work on some of your own art projects, please bring your art supplies with you.  The supplies will be furnished for the art activities which are included in the workshop.  Light snacks will be provided throughout the day, but since we are staying until 2:00, you may wish to bring a sack lunch. The fee for the workshop, which includes all supplies is members $60 and non-members $75. To register or for further information call 601-928-6298.

REMEMBER: If you attended the Carlson, Garraway, Cassibry or Huffmaster workshop in 2014 and are a current SCAC member, Joy’s workshop is free, but remember to register by calling 601-928-6298 or contacting Sandra at her email at sandra.cassibry@mgccc.edu.
