Free Little Library Houses

The Friends of Stone County Librariesis proud to sponsor “Free Little Library Houses” in our public and school libraries and features local artists.  The “Seuss House” was designed and built by the Stone County Prisoners and painted by Stone County Artist Kelly Spacht. This library is located at the Stone Elementary School and offers books to children. A book exchange is recommended but not required!

 

Dizzy Dean’s Birthday Celebrated

Great day at the Dizzy Dean Welcome Center in Wiggins, Stone County, Mississippi, celebrating Dizzy’s Birthday ! Come see Dizzy’s mural at the Welcome Center and meet “Dizzy” the cat!

Dizzy was born January 16, 1910, in Lucas, Arkansas, but called Stone County home for many years.

Kym Carraway Book Signing

Community Notes:

Join us January 14, 2016, at noon at the Lightered Know Community Kitchen for the signing of Song of the Birds. Kym’s newest book includes her beautiful bird paintings and spiritual notes.

Upcoming Event Reminders

  • September 15: Stone County Arts Council (SCAC) meeting is at 5:30pm followed at 6:30pm by a stained glass assemblage workshop (cross/dragonfly);
  • September 19: 9am-3pm; Debra Ballinger Basic Pencil Drawing;
  • October 10: Funky Fish with artist Kelly Spacht has been rescheduled for this date for 9am-3pm;
  • October 20: Stone County Arts Council meets at  5:30pm followed at 6:30pm by a  “Home” Canvas painting workshop with Sandra Cassibry.

To sign up for any of the workshops, please call Sandra Cassibry at 601-928-6298. Most 1/2 day classes are $30 members and $40 non-members and full day classes are $60 for members and $75 non-members.

All meetings and workshops are at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus unless other wise noted.

The Telling Trees Project and “A-Z” Books Recognized

The Stone County Economic Development Partnership (SCEDP) nominated “The Telling Trees Project” and the “A-Z” books for the Mississippi Urban Forestry Award for Commercial and Community Development. Receiving the Award from the Mississippi Forestry Commission are Sandra Kirke representing SCEDP and Kathryn Lewis representing The Telling Trees.

Hester Bass and the “Secret World of Walter Anderson”

On August 20, 2015, Stone County students and citizens “enjoyed the journey opening the door to literacy” with award winning Author Hester Bass and the “Secret World of Walter Anderson.” Thanks to our sponsors and partners Stone County Economic Development Partnership (SCEDP), Stone County School District, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Perkinston Campus and Fine Arts Department, Friends of Stone County Libraries, the Stone County Arts Council, and the Pine Belt Libraries.
