About Elaine Maisel – “I paint on feathers because I like how the shape, size, and specific demands of feathers challenges me creatively, focusing my attention on detailed, mindful, miniature work. Like watercolor, there is little room for error. Once my brush touches the feather, it cannot be erased. My painted feathers are displayed behind glass, either inside glass ornaments or mounted in shadowboxes. The feathers I use come from local parrot owners; small family farms that raise free-range fowl such as chickens, guineas, and peacocks; and from Mississippi turkey hunters. I enjoy personally meeting the birds and bird-owners that provide the canvases for my acrylic paint.” Living and working in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Elaine is a member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi and is on the Mississippi Arts Commission Teaching Artist Roster. The Stone County Arts Council sponsored incredible studio classes the week of June 23rd. Classes included gel prints with Marilyn Ammons, prayer flags with Provie Musso, silk painting with Kelli Spacht and acrylic canvas flower painting with Joy Johnson. It was a great week to be together, experiment and “do art.”
The SCAC will meet July 15th at5:30 pm at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus! Plan to attend. An exciting update on the Community Arts Building will be presented.
Emilie Sumrall’s 9th grade English class at Stone High School completed this spring an extensive project studying Stone County’s history, government, transportation, leaders/heroes and agriculture. The students decided they wanted to take a huge step and become “first hand participants ” in Mississippi’s official “Mural County” and sponsor a mural celebrating the farmers and Stone County’s agriculture. Working with mural artist Kym Garraway, the mural is now underway, will be finished this summer and installed in the hallway leading to the SHS cafeteria in August.
A special thanks to Jack’s Home Improvement for donation of the boards for the mural.
