Updates from Your Stone County Arts Council

Join us for “Prime Time Family Reading Time”, a six-week reading program for adults and their lower elementary age children (ages 6-10). Parent/caregivers and children ail enjoy award winning books presented by a storyteller and discussion leader on topics such as fairness, courage, and dreams. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00pm at the Community Arts Center at MGCCC on 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/24, 4/7, 4/14. Contact Shugana Williams at 601-928-6259 for more information. This program is provided by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the Mississippi Humanities Council. Local sponsorship is by MGCCC and the Friends of Stone County Libraries.

The Literacy Celebration will be March 23, 2015, at 3:30 pm at the Wiggins Library. We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss bday with storytelling, activities, face painting, birthday cake and free Seuss books for children pre-k through 2nd grade! Come and celebrate. This program is being sponsored through a generous grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

The SCAC thanks all of you for your support of the Building Creative Economy Assets Conference. In one word, the event was Priceless! Thanks SCAC, MGCCC, SCEDP and the MS Development Authority. Pictures are available at the end of this article.

Daisha Walker and Kelly may be asking for our help for Pine Hill Day March 20-22, 2015. Thanks to them (and for others) for volunteering to help make the SCAC visible at the Pine Hill Celebration.

Join the Stone County Arts Council at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus for the Fabric Arts Show featuring the “Stone County Community Quilt” on January 27th at 6:00 pm. In addition to the “Quilt”, Fabric Art pieces from participants in the Quilt journey will be on display. This opening is open to the public so join us! The Pine Hill Dulcimers will perform at 6:30 pm.

Fabric Arts Gallery Show

Mark your calendar for January 27, 2015 at 6 pm at the Community Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus! The Stone County Community Quilt will be on site along with a Fabric Arts Gallery Show featuring students, community leaders and artists who participated in the creation of the Community Quilt.

If you have a fabric art piece/quilt that you would like to show please contact Sandra Cassibry at 601-928-6298 by January 22nd to let her know the size and number of pieces you have available. This event is sponsored by MS Gulf Coast Community College and the Stone County Arts Council.

  • November 19: Community Arts Center (CAC) Dedication at 1:00 pm at the CAC on the Perkinston Campus.
  • November 29: Support Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC) and the Friends of Stone County Libraries, shop at Barnes and Nobles from 11-5 and using the vouchers downloaded from the link below.   • Congratulations: SCAC member Sherry Carlson won Second Place in the Gulf Coast Art Association annual show with her piece “Southern Comfort.”
  • Update: The Community Art Quilt workshop on November 8th was a tremendous success! Quilter Marcus Weekly will be putting the pieces together. The Quilt will be dedicated in December (date TBA). Thanks to SCAC and fabric artist Diane Williams for their support and leading us through this incredible community celebration!

Stone County Journey/Art Quilt Community Teams At Work

Award winning Storyteller, Fabric Artist, and Author Diane Williams presented “The Historic Journey of African American Quilters” on November 7, 2014 in Wiggins, Mississippi. This program was sponsored by the MS Humanities Council.

Diane then lead Community Teams through the creation of a “Stone County Journey/Art Quilt” on November 8th. The SCAC sponsored this event. Below are photos of the Community Teams and their work.

SCAC News and Notes

The Ribbon Cutting for the new Community Arts Center will be November 19, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. All are invited to the ribbon cutting.
The Festival of Lights – Calling All Angels, a fund raiser for the SCAC,  will be held at the Malone Fine Arts Building (Perkinston Campus, MGCCC) beginning at 6pm on December 12, 2012.
SCAC monthly meeting will be November 11,2014,  at 5:30 pm (Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus) with studio class to follow to finish art pieces for Calling All Angels!

“The Historic Journey of African American Quilters” – November 7

Diane Williams has been called a storyweaver, a keeper of treasured tales, and a collector of phrases. She is the recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s Oracle Award and the Mississippi Humanities Council ‘s Special Chair’s Award. She is a author and fabric artist. She will be leading a team of artists, students and leaders from Stone County in the creation of a Story Quilt…Stone County’s 32nd Mural.
Diane will present “The Historic Journey of African American Quilters”, sponsored by the Mississippi Humanities Council on Friday, November 7 at 5pm at the EDP office. The public is invited to this event. The Story Quilt project is sponsored by the Bank of Wiggins, Stone Council Arts Council and MS Power-partners include Stone County EDP and MGCCC.
Admission is free and open to the public.
