Updates from Your Stone County Arts Council

Join us for “Prime Time Family Reading Time”, a six-week reading program for adults and their lower elementary age children (ages 6-10). Parent/caregivers and children ail enjoy award winning books presented by a storyteller and discussion leader on topics such as fairness, courage, and dreams. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00pm at the Community Arts Center at MGCCC on 2/24, 3/3, 3/10, 3/24, 4/7, 4/14. Contact Shugana Williams at 601-928-6259 for more information. This program is provided by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the Mississippi Humanities Council. Local sponsorship is by MGCCC and the Friends of Stone County Libraries.

The Literacy Celebration will be March 23, 2015, at 3:30 pm at the Wiggins Library. We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss bday with storytelling, activities, face painting, birthday cake and free Seuss books for children pre-k through 2nd grade! Come and celebrate. This program is being sponsored through a generous grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

The SCAC thanks all of you for your support of the Building Creative Economy Assets Conference. In one word, the event was Priceless! Thanks SCAC, MGCCC, SCEDP and the MS Development Authority. Pictures are available at the end of this article.

Daisha Walker and Kelly may be asking for our help for Pine Hill Day March 20-22, 2015. Thanks to them (and for others) for volunteering to help make the SCAC visible at the Pine Hill Celebration.

SCAC News and Notes

The Ribbon Cutting for the new Community Arts Center will be November 19, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. All are invited to the ribbon cutting.
The Festival of Lights – Calling All Angels, a fund raiser for the SCAC,  will be held at the Malone Fine Arts Building (Perkinston Campus, MGCCC) beginning at 6pm on December 12, 2012.
SCAC monthly meeting will be November 11,2014,  at 5:30 pm (Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus) with studio class to follow to finish art pieces for Calling All Angels!
You are invited: Award winning Storyteller, Fabric Artist, and Author Diane Williams will present “The Historic Journey of African American Quilters” at 5:00 pm on November 7, 2014 at the EDP office (Train Depot) in Wiggins, MS. This program is being sponsored by the MS Humanities Council and the public is invited-the program is fee). Diane will also lead Community Teams through the creation of a “Stone County Journey/Art Quilt” on November 8th. The SCAC is a sponsor of this event.
Mark your Calendar: The Friends of Stone County Library, MGCCC and Read…Achieve…Lead (literacy program) will be at Barnes and Noble (Gulfport, MS) on November 29, 2014 from  11am – 5pm.

SCAC October Meeting and Workshop

Join us October 21, 2014, at 5:30 PM for the monthly meeting of the Stone County Arts Council. This meeting is open to all interested citizens and will be held at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The meeting will be followed by a “Bulldog Painting Acrylic on Canvas” studio night with artist Sandra Cassibry. Cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. Call 601-928-6298 for more information and to register for class.

Reminder – SCAC September Meeting and Workshop

Reminder:
The Stone County Arts Council will meet September 16  at 5:30 pm in the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus. The Council is open to interested citizens.
The meeting will be followed by a “Make It, Take It, Share It” workshop at 6:30 pm in the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus. Participants will make crosses, barnyard wood angels, and stamped cards to sell at the MGCCC Festival of Lights: Calling All Angels. If participants choose to take/keep any of the items they create, there is a $25 studio fee.

Stapp Traveling Murals

The murals dedicated to the life and work of Emilie and Marie Stapp were on display in the Malone Fine Arts Building at the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during August 2014. Look for these murals and related materials to be on display at other Stone County venues throughout the year. photo 2photo 1

The mural is dedicated to Stone County’s strong agricultural presence and is titled: “Harvesting Knowledge through History.”  The mural was created by one of Emily Sumrall’s ninth grade classes with mural artist Kym Garraway and was funded by First Bank with donations from Jack’s Home Improvement. All citizens are invited.
August 30, 9AM-2PM, Visual Arts Center, MGCCC, Perkinston – Stone County Arts Council with quilt artist Marcus Weekly is offering a quilting workshop. For further information and to register for the class call Sandra Cassibry at 601-928-6298. Class size is limited.

Celebration of Emilie Blackmore Stapp

Almost finished! The second traveling Emilie Stapp mural featuring the characters from her books is being painted by artist Sherry Carlson with the art students at MGCCC-Perkinston Campus. This mural is funded by the Stone County Arts Council in partnership with the Mississippi Humanities Council, MGCCC and the Friends of Stone County Libraries. A special thanks to Sherry who is donating her time and talent, Sandra Cassibry (Fine Arts Chair/art instructor at MGCCC-Perkinston Campus) and the Pink Rooster Gallery in Ocean Springs for helping secure the canvas.

These murals will travel to the schools in Stone County and help tell the incredible story of Emilie Stapp, children’s writer and philanthropist, who lived in Stone County. This mural and a second traveling mural sharing Stapp’s life will be featured March 11th, 12:30-1:30, at the Visual Arts Center for Daisha Walker presentation on Stapp funded by the Mississippi Humanities Council, March 15th, 10AM-4PM, during the Doll Show and Tea Party at the Senior Citizens Center sponsored by The Old Firehouse Museum, and March 18th at 6:30PM  at the Visual Arts Center when the Walker presentation is repeated.

 

Join Us for the Elizabeth Huffmaster Gallery Opening

The exciting work of Elizabeth Huffmaster will be opening for public access on Monday, February 10, 2014, at 6PM at the Visual Arts Center of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Perkinston Campus.  We hope you will join us for this existing evening.

Happy New Year!

The Stone County Arts Council is off and running for 2014. A number of events and workshops are currently scheduled (as outlined below) and there is a lot more to come!

January Arts Council Meeting

The Stone County Arts Council will have its next meeting on Jan. 21st at 5:30 pm at Bodine Pottery with an Open House and pottery demonstration to follow at 6:30 pm. All interested participants are invited. Refreshments will be served. Join the Stone County Arts Council in celebrating potter Pat Bodine and Bodine Pottery!

Acrylic and Basket-making Workshop

The Stone County Arts Council is sponsoring an acrylic canvas workshop with Artist Sherry Carlson and a Pine Needle Basket-making workshop with Sandra Cassibry on January 25, 2014 at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. Participants may choose to take one or both workshops. Carlson’s workshop is 9 am-noon; Cassibry’s from 1-4.

For one workshop the fee is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. For both workshops the fees are $60 for members and $75 for non members. Class size is limited. Call Sandra Cassibry at 601-528-2343 or 601-928-6298 to register. All supplies are furnished for participants to complete one piece in each workshop. (All memberships must be renewed for 2014 to get the member rate!) Proceeds from this workshop will help support the “Yellow Brick Community Arts Project.”

Gallery Opening

On February 3, 2014 at 6:00 pm, Award Winning Coast Artist, Elizabeth Huffmaster will show her work at the Gallery at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. Join the Stone County Arts Council for the opening.

Kym Garraway Workshop

The Stone County Arts Council is sponsoring an acrylic canvas workshop with Hattiesburg artist Kym Garraway on February 15, 2014 from 9AM-2PM at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. The workshop fee is $60 for members and $75 for non-members (All memberships must be renewed for 2014 to receive the members’ rate!) All supplies are furnished for participants to complete one art piece. Proceeds from this workshop will help support the “Yellow Brick Community Arts Project.”

February Arts Council Meeting

The Stone County Arts Council will meet February 18, 2014 at 5:30 pm at the Visual Arts Center on the Perkinston Campus of MGCCC. All interested citizens are invited. For more information contact Sandra Cassibry at 601-528-2343 or 601-928-6298.
